Lucerne, Switzerland – It was a quiet Sunday afternoon on Lake Lucerne when a Rolls-Royce Cullinan glided through the city streets, turning heads as it made its way toward the waterfront. Behind the tinted windows? None other than Anant Ambani, son of India’s richest man, and his wife Radhika Merchant.
The couple, who made global headlines with their lavish $500 million wedding in India in 2024, were spotted boarding a private yacht, basking in the Alpine sun on Lucerne’s crystal-clear waters. A reader who witnessed the scene told Zentralplus, “I couldn’t believe it.” First spotting the iconic car, he later recognized the high-profile couple enjoying a relaxed moment on deck.
Their appearance in Switzerland has sparked speculation about whether Lucerne might be the backdrop for their first wedding anniversary. With Bollywood royalty like Shah Rukh Khan and international celebrities including Ivanka Trump and the Kardashians in attendance at their wedding, Lucerne now quietly hosts the couple in a much more private setting.

Discover Switzerland’s lake-hopping paradise in the Lucerne region. From crystal-clear waters and historic paddle steamers to mountain hikes and lakeside dining, this guide covers the top lakes, activities, and travel tips plus where to stay for the perfect retreat.
Why Lake Lucerne Is a Must-Visit in Switzerland
Lake Lucerne is the centerpiece of central Switzerland’s lake district. Surrounded by dramatic peaks like Mount Rigi and Mount Pilatus, the lake stretches across 113 km² and features hidden coves, fjord-like inlets, and picture-perfect towns like Weggis, Vitznau, and Brunnen.
Visitors can enjoy relaxing lake cruises aboard vintage paddle steamers or use boat transfers to connect with mountain cableways and scenic railways. The lake is not only a visual highlight, it’s a gateway to Swiss nature, culture, and leisure.
Water Sports in Lucerne: Paddleboarding, Windsurfing, and Diving
Switzerland’s lake-hopping experience goes beyond sightseeing. On Lake Lucerne, windsurfing is especially popular in the southern arm (Lake Uri), thanks to its strong thermal winds.
Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) and kayaking are widely available in Buochs, Weggis, and Beckenried. For adventure seekers, diving tours offer crystal-clear visibility and submerged points of interest near Vitznau and Nidwalden.
Scenic Hiking Routes Near Lucerne’s Lakes
If you love lakeside walks and mountain views, you’ll find several well-marked hiking trails around Lake Lucerne. The Waldstätterweg is a long-distance trail that loops around the lake and offers a mix of forests, vineyards, and heritage sites.
For a higher-altitude adventure, the Four Lakes Trail near Engelberg connects Trübsee, Engstlensee, Tannensee, and Melchsee in one breathtaking trek. Closer to the water, routes like the “Nose Tour” in Buochs or the lakeside path around Alpnachstad provide peaceful, low-elevation options.
Hidden Gems: Rotsee and Other Nearby Lakes
Just north of Lucerne lies the Rotsee, a narrow, wind-sheltered lake famous among rowers and locals for its calm ambiance. It’s ideal for a morning jog, quiet paddle, or picnic along the shore.
Nearby lakes like Lake Sempach, Lake Zug, and Greifensee (a birdwatcher’s haven near Zurich) add variety to your lake-hopping itinerary. These lakes are accessible by car or rail and offer quieter, less touristed experiences.
Cultural Attractions Along Lake Lucerne
Schloss Meggenhorn
Rütli Meadow
Lucerne’s lakes aren’t just natural wonders, they’re full of history. Visit Meggenhorn Castle, a 19th-century mansion perched above the lake, surrounded by vineyards and walking paths.
For history lovers, the Rütli Meadow is a key destination. This is where the Swiss Confederation was founded in 1291. It’s accessible by boat and a short hike, making it a rewarding cultural stop during your lake cruise.
Where to Eat: Dining on Lake Lucerne
Lake Lucerne offers the perfect balance of comfort and natural beauty. The lakeside villages provide a peaceful atmosphere, with easy access to swimming spots, hiking trails, and boat docks that connect you to the region’s top attractions.
Dining along the lake is a highlight in itself. Many restaurants serve locally sourced fish, traditional Swiss dishes like Rösti and Älplermagronen, and regional wines. Outdoor seating is common, and meals are often accompanied by sweeping views of the lake and mountains, especially beautiful at sunset.
Transportation Tips: Getting Around the Lake Region
Traveling around Lake Lucerne is easy and scenic. SGV operates a fleet of historic and modern boats that connect 32 lakeside towns, many of which are linked to cogwheel trains and cable cars.
If you’re driving, consider using the Beckenried–Gersau car ferry, which cuts across the lake and saves time. The Visitor Card Lucerne offers discounts on local transport and attractions, making it ideal for multi-day explorers.

Switzerland is quickly becoming more than just a beautiful holiday destination—it’s a new home for the world’s elite. In 2025 alone, a record-breaking 3,000 millionaires are expected to move here, according to the latest Private Wealth Migration Report from Henley & Partners. That’s double last year’s number and a strong sign that Switzerland’s appeal is only growing.
What’s driving this movement? Several factors:
Political stability
Excellent healthcare and infrastructure
Discreet and efficient financial services and
Breathtaking natural beauty
While countries like the UAE, USA, and Italy also rank high for millionaire migration, Switzerland stands out for its blend of privacy, luxury, and peaceful alpine living. The canton of Lucerne, nestled between mountains and lakes, is particularly attractive to newcomers seeking both cultural richness and tranquility.
British Millionaires Moving to Switzerland
The biggest outflow? The United Kingdom. Over 16,500 millionaires are expected to leave the UK this year, citing rising taxes and a shifting political landscape. Many are choosing Switzerland where certain cantons offer residency-by-investment programs, sometimes called “golden visas,” starting at 200,000 CHF per year in lump-sum taxation.
Where They’re Coming From
Beyond the UK, Switzerland is also seeing wealthy newcomers from Russia and China, both of which saw major declines in their millionaire populations. In fact, over half of Switzerland’s golden visa recipients this year are Russian nationals, followed by Chinese citizens seeking greater personal and financial security.

Switzerland’s Lake Lucerne has long been a destination of understated elegance, and this summer, it welcomed a distinguished guest. Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry recently shared a glimpse of her visit to central Switzerland, where she spent a serene afternoon at the Park Hotel Vitznau.
With panoramic views over the lake and temperatures exceeding 30°C, Ms. Berry relaxed on the hotel’s terrace, accompanied by the sounds of pianist Pavlina Uszynska. A glass of red wine in hand, she posted a simple yet warm message on social media: “Hello, Switzerland!”
Known for her role in Monster’s Ball (2002), a film directed by Swiss filmmaker Marc Forster, Berry’s visit may well be a personal return to a country that holds both professional and scenic significance.
While the purpose of her visit remains private, her appreciation for the region is clear. She joins a growing list of international figures, including Madonna, Robbie Williams, and Chrissy Teigen, who have all chosen Switzerland as a place to rest and reconnect..
Lucerne’s charm lies not in celebrity, but in its enduring beauty, something visitors of every background can appreciate. Even so, a quiet toast from a Hollywood icon reminds us just how far this scenic corner of Switzerland can reach.
Summer is undoubtedly the most magical time to experience Switzerland. With long days, mild evenings, and lush alpine landscapes in full bloom, it is the perfect season to unwind and explore.
